WILD SPACE A GO GO (musical)

music
book - JP Linde   lyric - Brad Beaver

This original two-act musical celebrates the sexual, swnging sixties combining the camp of B-grade science fiction movies with the wild escapades of a mistaken sexual-indentity farce.  Think Barbarella and Buck Rogers ---- then go way past that!

In addition to working with my long time, LEMTW writing partner (the talented and satirical Brad Beaver), I am delighted to once again work with JP Linde - the same stand-up comic, actor and screenwriter who I developed my first full length musical with back in the 1970s.  JP's unique knowledge and love of movies made him the perfect librettist for this project.

While most two-act musicals have taken me from 3-7 years to write, for the first time ever, my partners and I finished a terrific first draft of this musical in less than a year.  The outline was written from June-October 2006, all song songs were placed over the first weekend of  December 2006 and then over the course of the next 10 months we wrote all music, lyric and dialog -- completing the draft on Halloween 2007.

Supported by a terrific cast of  actor/singers, we mounted a public reading at the CoHo Theater in Portland on December 10, 2007 and then took in verbal or written comments from almost 40% of an SRO audience.  What a delight.  And we learned a lot.  After several days of discussion between partners, we began drawing out the changes we wanted to accomplish and spent nearly 3 months in rewrites.

Plans are under way to mount a production in 2008.  Look for more information at our new website at www.wildspaceagogo.com.

CHRISTMAS AT THE SPREAD EAGLE INN (musical)
music
book and lyric - Brad Beaver

As mentioned elsewhere, this is the replacement project for the incomplete Christmas at the Bishop's Bottom and will be the companion one-act to the already completed Christmas at the Kings Head Inn. Set in 1690 London, the musical bestows the magic of much sought after Christmas wishes to the ribald and repentent patrons and staff of this hospitable coffeehouse.

Currently in development, the outline and first draft of the script are complete.  Song and lyric composition are underway and samples will be posted upon completion

THE CANTERVILLE GHOST (musical)
book and music
lyric - Brad Beaver

This is an adaptation I have wrestled with for 7 years.  The original Oscar Wilde short story is problematic and does not immediately lend itself to musical theater (despite numerous ill-fated attempts to make it a musical.)   Consequently, it has taken me a while to solve the inherent problems of the book and develop this project as the Disney-styled production I envision.  Set in 1905 England, a young American girl helps the Canterville ghost escape his earthly shackles while she learns to love and be loved in return.

Currently in development, the final working plot outline has been peer-reviewed and critiqued with summary edits.  Song placement, intention and subject are being laid out in preparation to begin song compostion.

THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS
  - 2008
(musical)
music and co-book
lyrics and co-book - Russ Cowan

You'll find this project in the MUSICALS section of this site, but in 2008 we are writing an all new adaptation to improve the "play with music" that was produced at the Northwest Children's Theater in 1998.  This adaptation comes from the Graham book itself, ignoring the A. A. Milne adaptationcarried by Samuel French.

Happily, this project is currently under consideration for production at Central Catholic HS in Portland, OR.
